Sustainability Management is a website maintained by Robert A. Spence. Robert was born in Toronto and then his family moved to England when he was 11. He completed his high schooling there and went on to Cambridge University where he obtained his MA (Cantab).
He worked in France for a year as a labourer on a chicken farm and then returned to Canada to become a lawyer. He received his law degree from Queens University, where he won the law school's prize for top marks in business planning.
Back in Toronto, Robert articled at McCarthy & McCarthy, a Bay Street law firm (now known as McCarthy, Tetrault). He was admitted to the bar in 1981 and served as Law Clerk to the Chief Justice of the High Court of Ontario.
He then joined Aird & Berlis, another prestigious Bay Street firm, where he practised for the next 12 years, specializing in the resolution of business disputes.
Since 1994, Robert has run his own law firm, remaining focused on the resolution of business disputes and working with business managers to solve their problems.
An abiding interest in the environment lead him to take a Masters degree in environmental studies at York University while still a practising lawyer. His studies concentrated on the relations between sustainability and economic development through globalisation.
He was awarded his MES (Master of Environmental Studies) in 1998. Since then he has immersed himself in the study of ecology and the need for businesses to embrace sustainable practices as a core part of their work.
He has also been certified by the Canada Green Building Council as a LEED Accredited Professional.
Robert is married and has three daughters. He can be contacted through this website or at 416-534-9424.
